Wacotron Puts His City On The Map With New ‘Out The Blue’ Mixtape

Published

on

Putting his hometown on the map with his frank lyricism and heavy Lone Star State drawl, Wacotron is one of Texas’s most exciting rappers. Today, he shares Out The Blue, the highly-anticipated follow-up mixtape to his critically acclaimed 2021 project Smokin Texas. Highlighted by heavy trap production from Southside & 808 Mafia, among others, the 11-track effort establishes Wacotron’s status as the man in his city. He shares harrowing tales about life on the streets of Waco, weaving pearls of street wisdom and sly turns-of-phrase.

Among project highlights are the dark Texas club anthem “Let Em Know,” as well as the heartfelt, guitar-laden “The Blues,” which finds the street veteran taking his sound in a new direction as he reckons with his past. Featuring appearances from Freebandz rapper Doe Boy and Atlanta mainstay Derez D’Shon and additional production from superstar artist/producer MarshmelloOut The Blue is available everywhere via Pick Six Records/808 Mafia.

Along with the new mixtape, Wacotron shares the video for “Game Time,” a highlight from the project produced by Project X of 808 Mafia. On top of a hauntingly hypnotic trap instrumental, Wacotron unleashes bar after bar as he warns his opps not to cross him: “I’m quarterback and I’m picking the blitz up,” he spits. In the DJ Black Messiah-directed video, Wacotron ignores ‘no trespassing’ signs as he proves he runs the streets of his hometown.

With Out The Blue, Wacotron plans to build on the success of his debut 2021 mixtape Smokin’ Texas, which received praise from ComplexHipHopDXDJ Booth, and more. He hasn’t been entirely quiet over the past year, though, as he’s made waves in the rap game with singles like “Raw” and “Free Mason” (each with over 4 million streams on Spotify). The Waco, TX native has also been an ambassador for central Texas rap, working alongside other Waco risers and boosting their careers while he becomes a star in his own right.

With the release of his sophomore project Out The Blue, Wacotron proves he’s an artist to watch in the bustling Texas rap scene. Stay tuned for much more from the young rapper in the near future.

Grammy and Juno Award-winning producer/engineer David Strickland releases his debut solo instrumental album Foundation

Grammy and Juno Award-winning producer/engineer David Strickland has released his debut solo album Foundation viaMNRK Music, a 20 track instrumental project that seamlessly blends his hip hop-fuelled musical inspirations over the years. Boasting production credits with a who’s who of rap superstars including DrakeEPMDThe ClipseDef SquadMethod ManKardinal OffishallSaukratesMaestro Fresh Wes and many more, Foundation arrives as a follow up to his last critically-acclaimed 2022 release Spirit of Hip Hop: Elements album, and its prior accompanying series, that celebrated, showcased and highlighted a wide range of North American rap icons alongside emerging Indigenous rappers. “This album represents the first time I did something musically that was just strictly by myself. No MCs or singers. Just me alone. Producer and engineer,” explains the Scarborough-born producer/engineer who has quietly worked behind the scenes for decades, producing, mixing and/or engineering records from the likes of Canadian urban music legends including Glenn LewisGhetto ConceptJelleestoneChoclair and k-os. “I was in NYC going through beats in the studio and I was looking at the last two albums I released and the instrumental versions, and it made me think about how guys like DJ Muggs and The Alchemist have been doing instrumental albums for years. I spoke to my A&R and VP about the idea, and then locked myself in the studio and banged out and revamped a couple beats and it just all came together.”

Strickland pays homage to his neighborhood roots on “Scarboro Forever”, and references his career sustenance on “The Journey”, but what lies at the core of the highly rhythmic, breezy and boom bap-inspired production on Foundation, is that at its core, it reminds listeners of what it takes to make a hit record – the production, which is the foundation. But the album title carries deeper layers of meaning. “Music is the foundation of any song, and I am a part of the foundation of the ‘Toronto Sound’. Any good project needs a solid foundation. And say what you want about me, but I’m a finisher. I always deliver.” Foundation delivers on all fronts, and appeals to music lovers of many stripes, as its contemporary sonic edges are rounded out nicely by its timeless classic old school musical sensibilities.
