NY multihyphenate Madison Star unveils her layers in “International Star”
With a commanding presence that permeates her music and an appetite for success, Madison Star is carving her own path in NYC’s busy music scene. In commemoration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, Star embraces every facet of her womanhood in “International Star,” out now!
Initially released in December 2023, “International Star” finds Star confidently owning all of her passions that make her who she is today. Spitting affirming rhymes over a calming, nostalgic production, the rising rap fashionista makes it clear that all her current success is earned, never given: “N****s wanna eat up the Star like Michelin/I double up my dividends/Hold up, I ain’t turning tricks for profit/I elevate in the tropics, remaining humble and honest,” she raps. The Nimi Hendrix-directed video toggles through clips of the 25-year-old wearing many hats throughout in her career, capturing her in action as a doula, headlining a sold-out show at NYC’s Pianos venue, and overseeing a shoot for her Madison Star Couture collection with the assistance of her mom, legendary fashion stylist Misa Hylton. This track resonates with the girl bosses everywhere, as Madison is proof positive that we have the ability to be jacks of all trades and a master of all.
The video for “International Star” arrives shortly after Star was acknowledged as a Living Legends Awards for Service to Humanity honoree last week in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the new visual follows up her previous singles “Queen Afua” and “For The Girls,” which previously earned her praise from HYPEBEAST. Hailing from Westchester, NY, Madison Star has always been surrounded by hip-hop, R&B, and fashion – all which permeates her music. In September 2021, she released her debut mixtape, FREE STYLE: THE MIXTAPE. The 8-track mixtape is featureless, proving that Star can hold her own on a track and leave a formidable first impression on listeners. With hard-hitting tracks like “SS OFF WHITE,” “P*SSY RAP” and “DRESS 2 KILL,” she makes it clear she’s that girl and has the bars to make you affirm it. Within the same year, she also launched her fashion house, Madison Star Couture, in which she creates custom statement pieces from intricate fabrics. Black Skywalker, the rising artist with an undeniable buzz, drops his debut EP, I Need Therapy.
The new project promises to usher in the new era of hip-hop. “Rap music is in a dark place and I came to bring the light,” said Skywalker. “The type of music I make is best described as Outer Space Jedi-level rap shit.”
Black Skywalker and Chris Rosa produced the debut EP featuring the focus track “Pills and Alcohol”. The single describes a man battling depression and anxiety with prescription medicine and champagne.
The EP includes hard-hitting 808s, crackling snares, and spacey synths. “We in Love” is a melodic record with a bouncy bass and drums. However, the lyrics depict a flawed relationship due to social media and porn addiction.
Black Skywalker’s ‘Pain of Letting Go’ has huge production and raw guitar. The lyrics express deep emotion and heartbreak, making the EP’s inspiration very clear.
“Therapy” is a song that touches on the struggles of life and the importance of seeking help. The production is interesting, with dark verses and uplifting hooks. The second verse highlights the benefits of opening up to a therapist and encourages others to do the same.
“Slide with Me” is a standout track from the EP with great production and an infectious hook. It narrates the story of falling in love with the woman of your dreams and has an upbeat vibe that sets it apart from the rest of the EP.
EP delivers a relatable conversation, amazing production, and intentional songwriting. Black Skywalker calls it outer space Jedi-level rap music.
