“City Phonk” Out Now— Listen to a New Hybrid Genre from LA Rapper Nada5150

Published

on

Rapper and lyricist Nada5150 steps into a new chapter in his first self-produced single, “City Phonk,” released via TikTok distributor SoundOn on Thursday, November 17th, 2022—The song’s genre is a hybrid of Japanese City Pop and the Southern hip-hop Phonk sound, bringing together a variety of personal inspirations from Nada5150’s life.

Lyrically, “City Phonk” is close to the heart of the Los Angeles-based rapper. Nada5150 shares the depth this release has for him— “This song was a pat on the back to myself. I made it through a hell of a lot in this short time I’ve been alive. I bought a trip to Tokyo as a gift to myself for being ten years sober. This trip was supposed to be with my friend, but he died this year from an overdose. My friends loved and supported my music when they were alive. So I feel like making music is my way to honor them. I’ve wanted to make a song like this for a long time. I wanted to pay tribute to my friends who died this past year as I said their names in the song at the end, including a vocal snippet of my late best friend saying this is a forever thing.”

The deeply personal nature of “City Phonk” inspired Nada5150 to take on the role of producer, citing his love of the two genres and the specific aesthetic of this new, hybrid sound. Utilizing a sample from Ryokuoushoku Shakai’s “Shout Baby,” Nada5150 integrates traditional Japanese art throughout “City Phonk,” staking out a new genre for the dynamic artist.
