ROWDY REBEL RELEASES NEW SINGLE “ROWDY VS. REBEL”!

Published

on

Brooklyn-bred rapper and hitmaker Rowdy Rebel releases his new single and music video, “Rowdy vs Rebel.” The feature finds the rapper stuck in a Jekyll and Hyde dynamic: torn

between his aspirational self, Rowdy, and his reckless side, Rebel. The new song and video are now available. The video will also premiere with BET on Viacom’s Time Square Billboard on Friday April 8th  in New York at 12PM EST and 6PM EST.

“Rowdy vs. Rebel” is as vulnerable a look into the life of Rowdy Rebel as the NYC star has offered since his release from prison in 2020. Aptly, Rowdy reminds the listener that despite the progress he’s made, understandably, there are fibers of his old life that still linger. “Late nights, I’m out of my mind,” he raps as the beat quiets. “I talk to myself, and this [is] what I find.” He resists negative thoughts for a few short bars, then lets them win as the unmistakable drill beat kicks back in.

The video, directed by Damien Sandoval (Latto, “Big Energy”; Tyga, “Taste”) mirrors the song’s frenetic energy. Split-screen effects and creative lighting illuminate Rowdy’s struggle, but the rapper’s energy never fades. Rebel, a pioneer of the initial Brooklyn drill movement (2010s), has not lost a step literally or figuratively. He is joined by fellow rapper Fetty Luciano on set as they both ensure that the twirls and bops that characterize Brooklyn’s present-day drill scene continue to reach the masses.

“Rowdy vs. Rebel” follows a slew of promising releases from Rebel leading up to the release of his “comeback” full-length project. 2021 saw Rowdy collaborate with Funk Flex, Nav and A Boogie on a trio of buzzworthy releases, as well as the Hot 100-charting collaboration with Young Thug, “Came and Saw,” from the YSL imprint compilation album. He’s also been back to work with longtime friend and collaborator Bobby Shmurda on “Shmoney,” which also features Quavo of The Migos.

Despite a relatively brief career to this point, Rowdy’s legacy is robust. Alongside Bobby Shmurda, of “Hot N***a” fame, Rowdy ushered in a new era of Brooklyn rap in 2014 with songs like his RIAA Gold-certified single “Computers” and cult classics like “Shmoney Dance.” The movement, co-signed and acknowledged by the likes of Beyoncé and Justin Bieber, helped set the stage for the borough’s current drill wave, popularized by the late Pop Smoke. Rebel’s voice is sampled on “Make It Rain” from Pop’s posthumous debut album.

Doodie Lo commands tracks with his easygoing rasp and take-no-prisoners persona. Continuing a breakout year for the Kankakee, IL native, Doodie Lo shares ISTG Pt. 2,” a new collaboration with Kodak Black. The new releases remixes “ISTG,” a buzzing single released by Doodie Lo earlier this year. “ISTG Pt. 2” revels in the electric chemistry between the two rappers, as Kodak complements Doodie’s brashly confrontational verse with an impish one of his own: “It’s all good ’til it’s all bad/That n**** all cap, can’t wait to get up with his soft ass,” snarls Kodak. Directed by Jerry Production, the video for “ISTG Pt. 2” finds the dynamic duo mobbing with a crew at a private hangar, where they sip their favorite beverages before hopping on a jet.

“ISTG Pt. 2” is the latest salvo in a busy year for Doodie Lo, following recent singles like “Back Bone,” “FACE,” and the Icewear Vezzo-assisted “Melrose,” as the artist looks to make his mark with his street anthems. Last year, Doodie Lo made an impact with Big Doodie Lo, the artist’s debut full-length project. The mixtape is home to “Me & Doodie Lo,” an energetic collab between King Von and Doodie that originally appeared on OTF’s Loyal Bros compilation (and racked up over 13.8 million YouTube views), in which the legendary O-Block native gives Mr. Kankakee an enthusiastic co-sign. Over the past year, Doodie Lo has considerably grown his profile, gaining tens of thousands of YouTube subscribers and Spotify Monthly Listeners, and collaborating with heavy hitters like MoneybaggYoPoohShiestyBIG30, and more.
