Did Tyga Takeover The Summer?

A few years ago, Tyga was nobody. A casualty of time and relevancy, his career was swallowed up by the inability to stay on top of the current trends or separate himself from his contemporaries. He tried to make something shake with 2017’s Kyoto, but it just didn’t work. People began to turn away in droves. He’d become more of a tabloid headline than a rapper, with his only remaining interest being how he would react without Kylie Jenner at his side.
Fast forward to this year, Tyga has not one, but two fiery singles that have become dominating forces. “Taste,” the Offset-inspired tropical hit, and “SWISH,” a track with so much tantalizing flavor that it’ll make you dance no matter who you are. Both of these cuts, while not that much different than each other, showcase the power that he has when he figures things out. Now everyone’s talking about him and his comeback season.
These tracks came in a summer of many musical disappointments. Kanye’s experimental seven-track album releases from G.O.O.D. Music largely fell flat (aside from Pusha T’s Daytona) and other genre stalwarts Drake, Nicki Minaj, and now, Eminem, have released lackluster projects. That Tyga has two of the best songs better than most of any of these catalogues speaks to his ability to understand what he’s good at and possibly change the game.
With only a few releases, and even in the face of controversy (Nicki was determined to bring him into her issue with Safaree), Tyga has still managed to come out on top. That’s a sure way to rule over the summer, just like the season – cool and breezy.
