Bay Area Spotlight: Larry June’s “On Me” is a calm, yet thunderous, look at the good life

Published

on

Larry June reps the Bay Area in his music, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from his latest single “On Me.” It lacks the bounce that characterizes the sound of the area but adds something else instead – loud, thunderous bass. Talk about something sounding epic. The production alone smashes through speakers at an alarming volume, no matter how loud or low your speakers are set at. When the vocals come in, showcasing June’s charismatic delivery, you already know that you have an epic track on your hands.

The visual backs up this epic feel by showcasing June’s life – filled with beautiful women washing nice cars and more beautiful women relaxing poolside around him. We can’t tell what we like more; the song or its accompanying visual. Regardless, June has a serious hit on his hands.

Asian Doll’s blisteringly bright video for “Savage Barbie” requires shades to view

Published

on

In the 38th episode of Pokemon, a scene of rapid flashing lights would become a real-life controversy. Over 12,000 people in Japan reported some kind of sickness – ranging from nausea to epileptic seizures – which ultimately resulted in the episode getting removed from the show’s rotation. The lesson learned from the ordeal was that bright lights are bad, bright flashing lights even worse. Since then, it’s been hard pressed to find something similar because the episode has become infamous, being parodied by many modern programs. Asian Doll’s new visual for “Savage Barbie” may be the closest thing to bright, flashing lights that we’ll get – just wear a pair of good sunshades before viewing the ludicrous visual.

Asian Doll’s chaotic aesthetic is on full display here, with her wearing outrageous outfits, partaking in outrageous situations, and even dabbling in the workings of autotune. All of these elements combine to create one strong showing of her evolving talents. While she does draw ever close to the inevitable Nicki Minaj comparisons, one thing’s for certain – she’s mastered the use of bright lights to create a great video; one that’s actually watchable as well.

Spotlight: Oba Rowland’s “Goat Flow” Is A Buoyant Delight

Published

Oba Rowland - Goat Flow

It’s always nice to hear something that’s more lively than trappish. Most street music is slower paced to take advantage of rattling bass, which in turn can affect the mood created listening to it. While it’s understandable and often works most of the time, it can be somewhat depressing. Oba Rowland’s “Goat Flow” flips that on its head, being as fast as any dancing song from the Bay Area yet still deeply ingrained in trap culture. It’s an interesting listen, in part because the beat is as complex as something much more slower, that gets better with multiple playbacks.

Oba’s flow is polished and tight; he’s clearly been doing this for awhile. Being that this is our entry point into his style, we’re encouraged to go back and check just how tight he’s been for some time. There’s clearly a lot to his music that we’re missing and we can’t wait to go and find more amazing stuff.
